The Lonely Tree of Llanfyllin

Species: Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris)
Age: Over200 years
Region: Powys, Wales, UK

Standing on a hill above Llanfyllin, this majestic Scots pine once dominated the skyline, watching over the town for over 200 years. Local people would visit it to carve their initials, propose marriage or scatter ashes. In February 2014 it was blown down in gales. But local people came together to tip over 30 tonnes of soil over the roots. The aim is to ensure that any intact roots can still function, allowing to tree to become a phoenix, continuing to live and grow but from a reclining position.
